Multi-Agent Systems with Uncertainty: Infectious Disease Dynamics over Networks

Disease dynamics within a human population depend on the contact network, social behavior, and infection and healing rates. In this talk we consider disease spread over a contact network and explores the extent to which individual behavior response to disease prevalence can interfere with its spread. In particular, we consider susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) disease dynamics where individuals are either susceptible or infected, and the disease contraction chance of a susceptible individual increases as its infected contacts grow. In addition, individuals respond to personalized information about their risk of infection by reducing their social interactions and hence reducing their risk of becoming infected. SIS disease dynamics showcase two patterns. In the first pattern the disease is likely to persist for a long time. In the second it is wiped from the population quickly. We establish a sufficient condition for determining which pattern will be emergent. The condition depends on the contact network and the ratio of healing and infection rates but not on the individual response. When the disease persists, individual response lowers average infectivity levels. In this scenario, the behavior response is more effective if individuals can receive information from individuals within their contact network.


Short Bio: 

Ceyhun Eksin is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Departments of Biology and Electrical & Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received a Ph.D. in Electrical and Systems Engineering, and a M.A. degree in Statistics from the University of Pennsylvania, both in 2015. He also received a M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from the Boðaziçi University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2008 and the B.S. degree in Control Engineering from Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2005. His research interests are in the areas of signal processing, control theory and game theory. His current work focuses on modeling and analysis of multi-agent systems in biological, communication and energy networks.
